Anglesey |
Fireball Racing made it's debut at the Hottrax Race Club at the weekend. Anglesey provided it's usual unpredictable weather with monsoon-like conditions on Saturday and a mini-heatwave on Sunday. Nevertheless, Fireball Racing was consistently at the front in every race over the weekend with a total of eleven trophies and five victories over the two days.
Saturday
The heavy rain gave the boys their first real wet experience of the year and following poor qualifying all round David, Matt and John had a lot to do.
John excelled in the very tricky conditions and was involved in a huge battle all race long. A last ditch pass on a fellow zx7 rider on the final lap signalled a very good race and it wasn't until we got the result sheet that we realised John had taken his first victory after coming out from retirement. This was followed by another great second place in the afternoon race.
David's poor qualifying gave him and uphill task which was exacerbated by interchangeable conditions which favoured an alternative tire choice. Despite this, David managed to take a solid sixth place in race one. In the second race, he made the correct tire choice and took his first outright victory on the new Suzuki. Finishing one second ahead of British Superstock rider Jonathan Lodge. The race was run in very wet conditions and it was impressive riding from both riders who both started near the back of the grid.
Matt struggled with mechanical issues in qualifying and had to start at the back of the grid in both races which hampered his progress throughout the day. However he dug deep and took two solid top ten results.
Sunday
The new day provided crystal clear skies and a new opportunity to put in a good qualifying performance. All three of the riders managed to improve on there qualifying from Saturday with David qualifying on pole in the powerbikes and matthew on the front row in the supersport race.
John had another great day. This time enjoying the new zx7 in the dry conditions and setting his new pb at the anglesey track. He was able to put in lap times that would be competitive in the modern bike classes. In the day's two races he took another second place and a third place, making it four podiums from four races. Again enjoying race long battles with riders on similar machinery and of a similar age.
Matt had a significantly better day in the dry conditions and took advantage of his front row start to take victory in the pre-national class and two podiums in the overall supersport class. He also took part in the pre-national Powerbike class taking victory in the second race and taking the fastest lap of the race.
David had two competitive fourteen lap races in the Powerbike class. In the first race he took a dominant victory by five seconds ahead of Lodge and also took the fastest lap of the race. In the second race, David and Lodge traded blows lap after lap until Lodge was able to take advantage as David was caught behind a back marker on the penultimate lap. David managed to bridge the gap very quickly but ran out of laps as Lodge took the victory by 0.15 of a second. Once again David took the fastest lap of the race which rounded off a great day's racing for all the boys.
Overall, Fireball a Racing had an excellent first outing with Hottrax and are likely to be entering one of the endurance races in the future. Watch this space.
The next outing for the team will be with Wirral 100 at Anglesey in June. If anyone has any photos from the weekend or would like further information on the teams progress please get in touch.

Wirral 100 - Round 2 - 26th April 2014
Oulton PArk
A very eventful day for David, Matt and John with a number of ups and downs.
David
A lack of valuable track time on a 1000cc bike combined with interchangeable weather didn't make for the best conditions to go racing. Nevertheless, David has come away from today with two 2nd place finishes and now leads the Powerbike and Open Class championships with only two rounds at his favoured Anglesey to go.
In the first of the two powerbike races David came home with a contented second place after struggling in damp/dry conditions. In the second race we were caught off guard by a sudden down-pour and were unable to change his tyres quickly enough for him to make the grid. As result, David started a lonely 42nd on the grid and manged to get a stormer of a start overtaking 30 riders on the opening lap. Unfortunately, by the end of the first lap the leaders had an unassailable lead and with only 5 lap races, David decided to save his tyres and came home in a commendable 7th place. In the final race of the day, David had a race long battle with British Superstock rider Joe Collier and was pipped across the finish line by 0.1s, but gained the lead in the championship which was a fine result given the lack of track time and a number of issues across the day.
Matthew
Matthew also had a mixed day and suffered a string of mechanical issues and was caught out by the tricky weather conditions. However he once again showed how he excels in adverse weather and gained a brilliant 6th place finish in the supersport class and a top 15 finish in the open class.
John
John had a very positive day and enjoyed his weekend tootle around the Cheshire countryside. He significantly dropped his lap times across the day with a 13th place finish in the junior open class and can't wait to get back out for Anglesey in a few weeks time.
Overall, we have a lot of positives to take from today and are all looking forward to a little summer break before the Wirral 100 and Thundersport GB rounds at Anglesey. A big thank you to everyone in the team, our supporters and to Hefin who kept everything running smoothly on what could have been a tricky day.

Wirral 100 - Anglesey 2013
Matt decided to enter the July round of Wirral 100 at Anglesey race track to allow him to get his confidence back up at this track before the Thundersport round here at the end of August. Matt had a very promising weekend entering the 600cc class as well as the Senior open. Matthew qualified well in 9th place for the 600 class and then had 3 races resulting in P8, P7 and P6. Brilliant. He then had two races in the senior open where Matt finished in P6 and P5! Best finishes of the year so far! Matt also achieved his fastest time EVER around Anglesey so we are all very proud and happy with this weekend! Bring on Thundersport in a few weeks time!

Oulton Park - MAy 2013
As Oulton is our local track Matt really wanted to get back racing here especially. It was his first time back out on the bike after his broken collarbone and he is rearing to go!!
Matt had a good first practice session, steady and careful as he didn't want to push his arm too much in the first session. He felt comfortable and in no pain after the first couple of session and started to get back into the swing of it and managed a really good qualifying time, the fastest he has been around Oulton on the Kawasaki with a 1:49.2 putting him 26th on the grid.
Race 1- Matt had a great start and was up to 20th place, 13th in the stock class but unfortunately he hit oil from a previous crash and came off the bike at Britons corner. Matt was fine and lucky no further damage to the collarbone! The bike however wasn't so lucky, part of the engine protection covers had snapped and come off making it very dangerous for Matt to ride again in case anything went into the engine causing bigger problems so we had to call it a day earlier than expected.

Broken Collarbone!
After a test day at Anglesey, unfortunately Matt had a big high side where he landed on his collarbone. Immediately the red flags came out and we were on our way to Medical centre to see him! Matt was on a lot of pain relief and we could immediately tell that he had done serious damage to his collarbone.
At the hospital, the X-Rays confirmed 2 breaks in the collarbone, one minor and one major one. Matt is going to rest up now and have some treatment in the hope to get back on his bike soon! Thundersport Cadwell isn't looking likely but we are aiming to be back for Oulton park!

After a mixed weather weekend, Matthew was a Thundersprint newby and a WINNER! He managed a 1.42 in the wet during the time trialled event beating the one and only JAMES ELLISON who was riding a 2013 road bike ! We are very proud of Matt and had a really great weekend.

Thundersport Round 2 2013
Matt had a great weekend in Donington. He entered The Van Insurer Elite 600 class, qualified in 17th place and finished all 3 races, 16th, 14th and 12th! fastest lap of the weekend was in the Trophy races (an extra class Matt entered for extra track time) to which he was racing against supersport bike and stock 1000cc bikes making it very difficult for him to be in the top half. However Matt managed a fab qualifying session of 19th place, 5th 600cc bike and after a not very good start managed to get back up and finished his first race in 20th place. for race 2, he was up to 13th place, 2nd in the 600cc class but had a massive moment nearly loosing the front and pulled in a lap later not wanting to damage his chance of racing in the Elite 600, Matts main focus. He has had a very succesful weekend and we are all very proud of Matt! Bring on Snetterton in 3 weeks time! Thanks for everyones support. #92

Saturday 16th February on a cold, icy and slightly damp day, Matt and his team travelled to Anglesey for the first testing day of the year, despite a lot of red flags and crashes on track, Matt managed to get his head back into the racing mode and managed a lap which was only 2 seconds of his best time ever around the circuit.. in the dry!
